Festool Domino ……Verdict Is In

I am in the midst of a kitchen cabinet build, which was pretty much the reason I bought the Domino, I wanted it for the face frames. While I understand many like to use pocket screws and /or biscuits, I guess I am still a bit old-fashioned ,in the fact that I like a mortise and tenon,  outside of a dovetail , I don’t know of any stronger joint.

I have used both the pocket screw and biscuits, and still do in certain applications, as stated , when it comes to what I consider a critical joint , I want a mortise and tenon, and that’s exactly what the Domino does,  but it does it faster and easier than anything I have ever seen, simply put.

It has been a long time since I used a tool that “REALLY” impressed me, but this did , it actually took longer to apply the glue than to cut the joints, and accuracy is beyond  belief, as well the mortise is cut a “tad” deeper for glue relief , well thought out.

In this case I am using some old reclaimed heart pine , and it can be hard and a bit brittle, and it can have softer areas, ( it’s basically old aged yellow pine), and while pocket screws would have probably sufficed, or a biscuit, many of the pieces are small enough to have gotten a biscuit in it would have been difficult, as well it would have had only one screw, especially for the drawer dividers that are  not otherwise supported, I know I have  full mortise and tenon joint that will not fail, I’m happy.

I don’t want to belabor the point, but I will simply say, that while they are pricy, they deliver, and better than anything I have ever seen,  function and speed are superb, and in my opinion they are faster and far more effective than pocket screws and comparable to a biscuit in speed, all of this said, I personally couldn’t be happier

I certainly don’t claim to be an expert on the Domino, but My friend Paul Marcel is about as good as I have seen and has done numerous blogs and so forth on the Domino as well as reviewed the new, bigger one, here is a link to Paul’s site, http://www.halfinchshy.com/

Well for me its back to cabinets and projects, super busy at the moment , but hoping by mid June it will calm and maybe we can get some of that fishing in, I’m ready ! later Y’all be safe

Charles Neil uses biscuits? Without gravy? I KNEW IT! I bet that Townsend clock is all veneered MDF held together by biscuits! I thought I saw “Timex” on the face! 🙂

(I am allowed to say anything as long as I put a smiley face at the end. Those are the rules of the internet and they are uncompromising.)

Seriously, though… I don’t own a Festool Domino but I have never heard anyone say they weren’t happy with a Festool product. Maybe I’ll sell a kidney and get one myself!

Good to know its CN approved. Its on the shortlist. I watched all of Paul’s videos on it a few weeks ago. Looks like the new one is a good improvement.
