Keep on Turning

Hope all had a good Holiday, I actually decided to film more on Saturday, so I did got a lot more of volume II done on the turning….today I will wrap it up and then Sherri can make it into  the DVDs, covered a lot of ground. Today I will do the bird cage (tilt top mechanism) and turning a top (out feed turning) as well will turn a pedestal, a rosette and a few other things…and its done….I cant think of anything we have not covered in turning…Vol II will be much bigger than Vol I, but its a ton of material covered….can not foresee a Vol III, we have it covered….

While filming the DVD, I kept thinking how much fun turning can be, it can also be frustrating, taking time to learn sharpening and chisel use changes the entire complexion of it, also learning how to section out large items helps a ton…one of the things I wanted to bring to the DVD was being able to take someone who had never turned or who had tried and not been successful into a enjoyable and successful knowledge of turning, I think we did just that….its always the little things..how you hold a chisel, which chisel you use….and how to “sneak up on it” , and the biggie, get numerous turnings to be the same….so I can’t say for sure when it will be released , but it will be filmed today…then back to my projects, and cases and bases…both of these DVDs (cases and turning) are results of having projects that require the techniques we employ, so I think we have the perfect arena to film them, so it will be a busy summer….a lot of filming and projects to get completed…but we are rockin thru….Tomorrow  I have to put my shop back together, move the lathes back to their respective places, get the work benches back in place and get back to projects…we have  several good ones we will be finishing up and beginning this week…so stay tuned.

Out to the shop and turn the camera on….Later ya’ll

  1. Given the title, I’d be tempted to name the bed “Proud Mary” – but that might get you in trouble.

Turning is one of those things that just hasn’t appealed to me, at least yet. I can appreciate the craft it takes, I’m just not yet been tempted – too many other things first.

  2. ken…turning is one of those things everyone avoids until they try it and learn how…then they are hooked….its great fun …and quite productive…..for me its also been a means of expanding my knowledge and adding to my furniture line….its made me alot of $ over the years

  3. So far I don’t see me turning too many 3/4″ spheres for puzzles :)

Seriously, I see what you’re saying and I may, at some point, change my mind. I don’t have an immediate need for it, nor does my current budget allow for tools I won’t be using – but if I sell millions of puzzles then I’ll be sure to check out a lathe as I’m sure that once I get started I’ll find *something* I can use it for. Toys, errr Tools are always like that.
