Running a little late today, watched the Debate last night. I’m now convinced we have aliens among us! Forget “Bail-Outs,” we need a political “Flush-Out!”

If ya really want to help the economy, buy something…..Yep…..that’s how it works. You buy one of my DVDs and I go buy wood or a tool and everyone makes a little profit all the way down the line….that’s the real Middle Class economy. Oh well, that’s just me.

Okay, this morning I’m headed up to Willow Run Custom Lumber (Dayton, VA) and a visit with Justin Schweitzer. I’ve known Justin for some time, Justin does a lot of custom sawing and flooring as well as hardwood lumber. Little different kind of mill that we visited at Good Hope Hardwoods so we’re gonna get a look at how his mill operates.

Spent yesterday filming some clips on tools and I got all the finish off of the face of the Bubinga slab, wet it down, turned it bottom up and put it in the sun. It’s starting to move back a little, bubinga is hard and dense so it’s not going to move fast, but it will move so a little at a time and patience is needed.

When I get back from Willow Run, I’m going to cut those claro slabs into some usable pieces. I’ve still got some filming to do. I’m going to try to get the Re-Saw and the Band Saw Fence thing filmed and the Kehoe Dove Tail Spline Jig filmed. I really like the jig and need to show it to you so you can get it on your Christmas list. I’m thinking that I will use it on the clock project, would make a super nice look, you’ll see.

Speaking of the clock project, how many of you have made the quilt rack? We haven’t gotten a lot of photos for the gallery yet but we know many of you are still working on them. The clock will be out in short order. Sherri will have the web page set for it with the pdf companion up by week’s end.  I am almost finished with the newsletter, that’s when we are going to start the clocks. Big Bob at Bob Kloes Hardwoods has gotten some material set aside for those who need it, we’ll get to that as well as the hardware needed so you’ll be ready to build along with me.

So…let’s not let all this political/financial turmoil get us down. Let’s get in our shops and do something constructive and rewarding. Let’s get to it.

Catch Ya Later!

  1. I discovered your homepage by coincidence.
Very interesting posts and well written.
I will put your site on my blogroll.
    :-)

  2. Sorry, can’t afford a DVD as much as I’d like to – I spent it all on getting tools :)

There are a couple that will go on my Christmas Wish List though, so there might be help for your part of the economy yet!

Speaking of wood moving, I’ve a question. On the router table I’m building they put the “Formica” surface on both sides of the top (the top is a 3/4″ birch plywood sandwiched between 1/4″ hardboard) – is this to help keep it flat by balancing moisture intake on both sides? After seeing what you’ve said the last couple of days I’d guess that’s why.

Would you prefer that these questions get asked over in the forum instead of here?

  3. Good lord, will you gives us a chance to catch or breath from summer, I need to build a keeping chest, a quilt rack, clock, damn only so many hours in a day. School nights the kids go to bed by 9:00pm so my saws have to be turned off. :) :)

    -Ace-

  4. Ace: maybe if you doubled the thickness of your workshop walls and lined it with anechoic material . . .

I know what you mean though. It’s hard to judge when it’s safe to fire stuff up in the garage without bothering the neighbors on the weekend. How early *is* too early, anyhow?

Luckily the sander and vaccuum don’t make too much noise so I can polish up cubes most any time I can get out there..

  5. Ken, thats exactly why they did the formica on both sides…same reason you have to veneer both sides of even mdf…if not its sure to warp….and Ace…take it easy, the videos and plans will be there when ya ready…..

  6. yep buying stuff will help the economy. but buying stuff made in America by Americans with American materials will help the economy a lot more than walmart will. thats what i try to look for when shopping hard to do these days though.

almost finish ready with the quilt racks here.

i have the same problem ace. my workshop is in the basement and we have tenants on the first floor. and my family is on the top. when the tenants leave i will have almost unlimited shop hours for a month or two! woo-hoo!
